How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 25 = 14.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/25, so part = 59 × 25 ÷ 100 = 14.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.75 is the 59% share of 25. The remaining 41% is 10.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $25 saves $14.75, so you pay $10.25.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 25 by 59% gives 39.75 and decreasing it by 59% gives 10.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 16.2975, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
