How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
- Multiply: 1.5 × 60 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 60 × 100 = 150%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 150/100 = part/60, so part = 150 × 60 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =150%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 150% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 60: it is 1.5 times 60.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 150% of its $60 cost means selling it for $90.
Adding and taking away 150%
Increasing 60 by 150% gives 150. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 150% and then lowering the result by 150% ends at -75, because the second 150% is taken of a bigger number.
