How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 200 ÷ 100 = 2
- Multiply: 2 × 60 = 120
- Check: Work backwards: 120 ÷ 60 × 100 = 200%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 200/100 = part/60, so part = 200 × 60 ÷ 100 = 120. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =200%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 200% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 60: it is 2 times 60.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 200% of its $60 cost means selling it for $120.
Adding and taking away 200%
Increasing 60 by 200% gives 180. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 200% and then lowering the result by 200% ends at -180, because the second 200% is taken of a bigger number.
