How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 41 = 24.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.6 ÷ 41 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/41, so part = 60 × 41 ÷ 100 = 24.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.6 is the 60% share of 41. The remaining 40% is 16.4, and the two parts add back up to 41.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $41 saves $24.6, so you pay $16.4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 41 by 60% gives 65.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 16.4. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 26.24, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
