How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 60 = 24.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/60, so part = 41 × 60 ÷ 100 = 24.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.6 is the 41% share of 60. The remaining 59% is 35.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $60 saves $24.6, so you pay $35.4.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 60 by 41% gives 84.6 and decreasing it by 41% gives 35.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 49.914, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
