How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 61 ÷ 100 = 0.61
  2. Multiply: 0.61 × 15 = 9.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.15 ÷ 15 × 100 = 61%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 61/100 = part/15, so part = 61 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =61%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.15 is the 61% share of 15. The remaining 39% is 5.85, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 61% off an item priced $15 saves $9.15, so you pay $5.85.

Adding and taking away 61%

Increasing 15 by 61% gives 24.15 and decreasing it by 61% gives 5.85. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 61% and then lowering the result by 61% ends at 9.4185, because the second 61% is taken of a bigger number.
