How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 63 ÷ 100 = 0.63
  2. Multiply: 0.63 × 5 = 3.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.15 ÷ 5 × 100 = 63%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 63/100 = part/5, so part = 63 × 5 ÷ 100 = 3.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =63%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.15 is the 63% share of 5. The remaining 37% is 1.85, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 63% off an item priced $5 saves $3.15, so you pay $1.85.

Adding and taking away 63%

Increasing 5 by 63% gives 8.15 and decreasing it by 63% gives 1.85. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 63% and then lowering the result by 63% ends at 3.0155, because the second 63% is taken of a bigger number.
