How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
  2. Multiply: 0.64 × 100 = 64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 64 ÷ 100 × 100 = 64%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/100, so part = 64 × 100 ÷ 100 = 64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =64%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

64 is the 64% share of 100. The remaining 36% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 64% off an item priced $100 saves $64, so you pay $36.

Adding and taking away 64%

Increasing 100 by 64% gives 164 and decreasing it by 64% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 59.04, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
