How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
- Multiply: 0.65 × 12 = 7.8
- Check: Work backwards: 7.8 ÷ 12 × 100 = 65%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/12, so part = 65 × 12 ÷ 100 = 7.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =65%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.8 is the 65% share of 12. The remaining 35% is 4.2, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 65% off an item priced $12 saves $7.8, so you pay $4.2.
Adding and taking away 65%
Increasing 12 by 65% gives 19.8 and decreasing it by 65% gives 4.2. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 6.93, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
