How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 69 ÷ 100 = 0.69
  2. Multiply: 0.69 × 25 = 17.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 69%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 69/100 = part/25, so part = 69 × 25 ÷ 100 = 17.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =69%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.25 is the 69% share of 25. The remaining 31% is 7.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 69% off an item priced $25 saves $17.25, so you pay $7.75.

Adding and taking away 69%

Increasing 25 by 69% gives 42.25 and decreasing it by 69% gives 7.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 69% and then lowering the result by 69% ends at 13.0975, because the second 69% is taken of a bigger number.
