How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 25 = 1.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/25, so part = 7 × 25 ÷ 100 = 1.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.75 is the 7% share of 25. The remaining 93% is 23.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $25 saves $1.75, so you pay $23.25.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 25 by 7% gives 26.75 and decreasing it by 7% gives 23.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 24.8775, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
