How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 90 = 6.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 90 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/90, so part = 7 × 90 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.3 is the 7% share of 90. The remaining 93% is 83.7, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $90 saves $6.3, so you pay $83.7.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 90 by 7% gives 96.3 and decreasing it by 7% gives 83.7. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 89.559, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
