How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 69 = 48.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48.3 ÷ 69 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/69, so part = 70 × 69 ÷ 100 = 48.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*69. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48.3 is the 70% share of 69. The remaining 30% is 20.7, and the two parts add back up to 69.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $69 saves $48.3, so you pay $20.7.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 69 by 70% gives 117.3 and decreasing it by 70% gives 20.7. These do not cancel out: raising 69 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 35.19, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
