How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 71 ÷ 100 = 0.71
  2. Multiply: 0.71 × 5 = 3.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.55 ÷ 5 × 100 = 71%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 71/100 = part/5, so part = 71 × 5 ÷ 100 = 3.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =71%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.55 is the 71% share of 5. The remaining 29% is 1.45, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 71% off an item priced $5 saves $3.55, so you pay $1.45.

Adding and taking away 71%

Increasing 5 by 71% gives 8.55 and decreasing it by 71% gives 1.45. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 71% and then lowering the result by 71% ends at 2.4795, because the second 71% is taken of a bigger number.
