How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 72 ÷ 100 = 0.72
  2. Multiply: 0.72 × 50 = 36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 36 ÷ 50 × 100 = 72%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 72/100 = part/50, so part = 72 × 50 ÷ 100 = 36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =72%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

36 is the 72% share of 50. The remaining 28% is 14, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 72% off an item priced $50 saves $36, so you pay $14.

Adding and taking away 72%

Increasing 50 by 72% gives 86 and decreasing it by 72% gives 14. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 72% and then lowering the result by 72% ends at 24.08, because the second 72% is taken of a bigger number.
