How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78
  2. Multiply: 0.78 × 60 = 46.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 46.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 78%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 78/100 = part/60, so part = 78 × 60 ÷ 100 = 46.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =78%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

46.8 is the 78% share of 60. The remaining 22% is 13.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 78% off an item priced $60 saves $46.8, so you pay $13.2.

Adding and taking away 78%

Increasing 60 by 78% gives 106.8 and decreasing it by 78% gives 13.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 78% and then lowering the result by 78% ends at 23.496, because the second 78% is taken of a bigger number.
