How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 90 = 87.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 87.3 ÷ 90 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/90, so part = 97 × 90 ÷ 100 = 87.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

87.3 is the 97% share of 90. The remaining 3% is 2.7, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $90 saves $87.3, so you pay $2.7.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 90 by 97% gives 177.3 and decreasing it by 97% gives 2.7. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 5.319, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
