How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 25 = 24.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/25, so part = 99 × 25 ÷ 100 = 24.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.75 is the 99% share of 25. The remaining 1% is 0.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $25 saves $24.75, so you pay $0.25.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 25 by 99% gives 49.75 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.4975, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
