How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 99 = 98.01
- Check: Work backwards: 98.01 ÷ 99 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/99, so part = 99 × 99 ÷ 100 = 98.01. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*99. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
