How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Divide the part by it: 100 ÷ 0.05 = 2,000
  3. Check: Work forwards: 5% of 2,000 is 0.05 × 2,000 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion: 100/whole = 5/100, so whole = 100 × 100 ÷ 5 = 2,000. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

100 is the 5% share of 2,000. The other 95% is 1,900.

Discounts: if 100 dollars is a 5% saving, the original price was $2,000.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 5% is 100, then 1% is 100 ÷ 5 = 20, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 200, 50% is 1,000 and 100% is 2,000.
