How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.5 = 80
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 80 is 0.5 × 80 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 50/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 50 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

40 is the 50% share of 80. The other 50% is 40.

Discounts: if 40 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $80.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 40, then 1% is 40 ÷ 50 = 0.8, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 8, 50% is 40 and 100% is 80.
