How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.2 = 200
- Check: Work forwards: 20% of 200 is 0.2 × 200 = 40.
Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 20/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 20 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40/20%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
40 is the 20% share of 200. The other 80% is 160.
Discounts: if 40 dollars is a 20% saving, the original price was $200.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 20% is 40, then 1% is 40 ÷ 20 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
