How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Divide the part by it: 50 ÷ 0.4 = 125
  3. Check: Work forwards: 40% of 125 is 0.4 × 125 = 50.

Another method. As a proportion: 50/whole = 40/100, so whole = 50 × 100 ÷ 40 = 125. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50/40%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

If 40% is 50, then 1% is 50 ÷ 40 = 1.25, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 12.5, 50% is 62.5 and 100% is 125.
