How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 60% of 10 = 0.6 × 10 = 6
- Take it off the price: 10 − 6 = 4
- Check: Add the saving back: 4 + 6 = 10.
Another method. In one step: you pay 40% of the price, so 0.4 × 10 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10*(1-60%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 60% off, you pay 40% of the price: 4 instead of 10, a saving of 6.
Shopping: an item marked $10 with 60% off costs $4 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
60% off followed by another 60% off is 84% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 60% of 10. Two discounts do not add up: 60% off and then another 60% off leaves 1.6, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
