How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 77 = 7.7
- Check: Work backwards: 7.7 ÷ 77 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/77, so part = 10 × 77 ÷ 100 = 7.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*77. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.7 is the 10% share of 77. The remaining 90% is 69.3, and the two parts add back up to 77.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $77 saves $7.7, so you pay $69.3.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 77 by 10% gives 84.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 69.3. These do not cancel out: raising 77 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 76.23, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
