How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 77 ÷ 100 = 0.77
  2. Multiply: 0.77 × 10 = 7.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.7 ÷ 10 × 100 = 77%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 77/100 = part/10, so part = 77 × 10 ÷ 100 = 7.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
