How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
- Multiply: 0.11 × 30 = 3.3
- Check: Work backwards: 3.3 ÷ 30 × 100 = 11%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/30, so part = 11 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.3 is the 11% share of 30. The remaining 89% is 26.7, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 11% off an item priced $30 saves $3.3, so you pay $26.7.
Adding and taking away 11%
Increasing 30 by 11% gives 33.3 and decreasing it by 11% gives 26.7. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 29.637, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 11. 11% of 30 and 30% of 11 are always equal (both are 11 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
