How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 30 = 3.9
- Check: Work backwards: 3.9 ÷ 30 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/30, so part = 13 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.9 is the 13% share of 30. The remaining 87% is 26.1, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $30 saves $3.9, so you pay $26.1.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 30 by 13% gives 33.9 and decreasing it by 13% gives 26.1. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 29.493, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 13. 13% of 30 and 30% of 13 are always equal (both are 13 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3.9), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
