How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 51 = 7.65
- Check: Work backwards: 7.65 ÷ 51 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/51, so part = 15 × 51 ÷ 100 = 7.65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.65 is the 15% share of 51. The remaining 85% is 43.35, and the two parts add back up to 51.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $51 saves $7.65, so you pay $43.35.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 51 by 15% gives 58.65 and decreasing it by 15% gives 43.35. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 49.8525, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
