How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 15 = 7.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.65 ÷ 15 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/15, so part = 51 × 15 ÷ 100 = 7.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.65 is the 51% share of 15. The remaining 49% is 7.35, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $15 saves $7.65, so you pay $7.35.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 15 by 51% gives 22.65 and decreasing it by 51% gives 7.35. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 11.0985, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
