How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
  2. Multiply: 1.5 × 40 = 60
  3. Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 40 × 100 = 150%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 150/100 = part/40, so part = 150 × 40 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =150%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 150% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 40: it is 1.5 times 40.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 150% of its $40 cost means selling it for $60.

Adding and taking away 150%

Increasing 40 by 150% gives 100. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 150% and then lowering the result by 150% ends at -50, because the second 150% is taken of a bigger number.
