How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 60 = 1.2
- Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/60, so part = 2 × 60 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.2 is the 2% share of 60. The remaining 98% is 58.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $60 saves $1.2, so you pay $58.8.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 60 by 2% gives 61.2 and decreasing it by 2% gives 58.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 59.976, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 60% of 2. 2% of 60 and 60% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 60 ÷ 100 = 1.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
