How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 200 ÷ 100 = 2
  2. Multiply: 2 × 100 = 200
  3. Check: Work backwards: 200 ÷ 100 × 100 = 200%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 200/100 = part/100, so part = 200 × 100 ÷ 100 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =200%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 200% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 100: it is 2 times 100.

Adding and taking away 200%

Increasing 100 by 200% gives 300. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 200% and then lowering the result by 200% ends at -300, because the second 200% is taken of a bigger number.
