How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 1 = 0.23
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.23 ÷ 1 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/1, so part = 23 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.23. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.23 is the 23% share of 1. The remaining 77% is 0.77, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $1 saves $0.23, so you pay $0.77.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 1 by 23% gives 1.23 and decreasing it by 23% gives 0.77. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 0.9471, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
