How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 60 = 15.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/60, so part = 26 × 60 ÷ 100 = 15.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.6 is the 26% share of 60. The remaining 74% is 44.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $60 saves $15.6, so you pay $44.4.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 60 by 26% gives 75.6 and decreasing it by 26% gives 44.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 55.944, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
