How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 10 = 0.3
- Check: Work backwards: 0.3 ÷ 10 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/10, so part = 3 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.3 is the 3% share of 10. The remaining 97% is 9.7, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $10 saves $0.3, so you pay $9.7.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 10 by 3% gives 10.3 and decreasing it by 3% gives 9.7. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 9.991, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 3. 3% of 10 and 10% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
