How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 5 = 1.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.55 ÷ 5 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/5, so part = 31 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.55 is the 31% share of 5. The remaining 69% is 3.45, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $5 saves $1.55, so you pay $3.45.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 5 by 31% gives 6.55 and decreasing it by 31% gives 3.45. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 4.5195, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
