How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 25 = 10.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/25, so part = 41 × 25 ÷ 100 = 10.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.25 is the 41% share of 25. The remaining 59% is 14.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $25 saves $10.25, so you pay $14.75.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 25 by 41% gives 35.25 and decreasing it by 41% gives 14.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 20.7975, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
