How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 45 = 18.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.45 ÷ 45 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/45, so part = 41 × 45 ÷ 100 = 18.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.45 is the 41% share of 45. The remaining 59% is 26.55, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $45 saves $18.45, so you pay $26.55.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 45 by 41% gives 63.45 and decreasing it by 41% gives 26.55. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 37.4355, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
