How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 50 = 20.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/50, so part = 41 × 50 ÷ 100 = 20.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.5 is the 41% share of 50. The remaining 59% is 29.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $50 saves $20.5, so you pay $29.5.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 50 by 41% gives 70.5 and decreasing it by 41% gives 29.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 41.595, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
