How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 55 = 22.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.55 ÷ 55 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/55, so part = 41 × 55 ÷ 100 = 22.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.55 is the 41% share of 55. The remaining 59% is 32.45, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $55 saves $22.55, so you pay $32.45.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 55 by 41% gives 77.55 and decreasing it by 41% gives 32.45. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 45.7545, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
