How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 60 = 25.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/60, so part = 42 × 60 ÷ 100 = 25.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.2 is the 42% share of 60. The remaining 58% is 34.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $60 saves $25.2, so you pay $34.8.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 60 by 42% gives 85.2 and decreasing it by 42% gives 34.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 49.416, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
