How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 60 = 27
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27 ÷ 60 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/60, so part = 45 × 60 ÷ 100 = 27. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27 is the 45% share of 60. The remaining 55% is 33, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $60 saves $27, so you pay $33.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 60 by 45% gives 87 and decreasing it by 45% gives 33. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 47.85, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
