How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 30 = 15.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.3 ÷ 30 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/30, so part = 51 × 30 ÷ 100 = 15.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.3 is the 51% share of 30. The remaining 49% is 14.7, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $30 saves $15.3, so you pay $14.7.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 30 by 51% gives 45.3 and decreasing it by 51% gives 14.7. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 22.197, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
