How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 50 = 29.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 29.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/50, so part = 59 × 50 ÷ 100 = 29.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

29.5 is the 59% share of 50. The remaining 41% is 20.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $50 saves $29.5, so you pay $20.5.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 50 by 59% gives 79.5 and decreasing it by 59% gives 20.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 32.595, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
