How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 70 = 4.2
- Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 70 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/70, so part = 6 × 70 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.2 is the 6% share of 70. The remaining 94% is 65.8, and the two parts add back up to 70.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $70 saves $4.2, so you pay $65.8.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 70 by 6% gives 74.2 and decreasing it by 6% gives 65.8. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 69.748, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
