How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 6 = 4.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 6 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/6, so part = 70 × 6 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.2 is the 70% share of 6. The remaining 30% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $6 saves $4.2, so you pay $1.8.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 6 by 70% gives 10.2 and decreasing it by 70% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 3.06, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 6% of 70. 70% of 6 and 6% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 6 ÷ 100 = 4.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
