How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1000 ÷ 100 = 10
  2. Multiply: 10 × 60 = 600
  3. Check: Work backwards: 600 ÷ 60 × 100 = 1000%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1000/100 = part/60, so part = 1000 × 60 ÷ 100 = 600. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1000%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 1000% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 60: it is 10 times 60.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 1000% of its $60 cost means selling it for $600.

Adding and taking away 1000%

Increasing 60 by 1000% gives 660. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 1000% and then lowering the result by 1000% ends at -5,940, because the second 1000% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 60% of 1000. 1000% of 60 and 60% of 1000 are always equal (both are 1000 × 60 ÷ 100 = 600), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
