How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 60 = 21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21 ÷ 60 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/60, so part = 35 × 60 ÷ 100 = 21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21 is the 35% share of 60. The remaining 65% is 39, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $60 saves $21, so you pay $39.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 60 by 35% gives 81 and decreasing it by 35% gives 39. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 52.65, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
