How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 63 ÷ 100 = 0.63
  2. Multiply: 0.63 × 10 = 6.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 10 × 100 = 63%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 63/100 = part/10, so part = 63 × 10 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =63%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.3 is the 63% share of 10. The remaining 37% is 3.7, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 63% off an item priced $10 saves $6.3, so you pay $3.7.

Adding and taking away 63%

Increasing 10 by 63% gives 16.3 and decreasing it by 63% gives 3.7. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 63% and then lowering the result by 63% ends at 6.031, because the second 63% is taken of a bigger number.
